Chandigarh, January 22:
The highly anticipated Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Mayor Election, originally slated for January 24, has been rescheduled to January 30. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav confirmed the new date following a directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which called for the administration to release a revised election notification.
Nomination Process and Court Intervention
Under the updated timeline, the nomination process will occur on January 25, between 11 AM and 5 PM. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had previously filed a petition in court seeking to delay the elections. AAP’s current Mayor, Kuldeep Kumar, argued for an extension of his term until February 20 to complete a full year in office. The court’s ruling resulted in the election being postponed to January 30, aligning it with the date of the last mayoral election held on January 29.
Candidates and Latest Updates
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Harpreet Babla as its mayoral candidate, with Bimla Dubey and Lakhbir Singh nominated for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. Meanwhile, the Congress, in collaboration with AAP, has proposed Jasbir Bunty and Taruna Mehta for the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor positions. However, AAP is yet to announce its candidate for the mayor’s post, adhering to its alliance agreement with Congress.
To ensure the election runs smoothly, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav has appointed councillor Ramneek Singh Bedi as the presiding officer for the proceedings on January 30.
