Chandigarh, December 31:
The ongoing strike by door-to-door garbage collectors in Chandigarh has led the Municipal Corporation (MC) to invoke the ‘no work no pay’ policy. Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar announced that wages of the protesting workers would be deducted for the days they remain on strike, including those who participated in the strike on December 21.
The strike, which began on Monday, has caused a sanitation crisis in the city, leaving households burdened with uncollected waste and overflowing bins. Despite repeated appeals from the MC for the workers to return to their duties, the strike continues.
Commissioner Kumar expressed the MC’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted essential services and assured that alternative arrangements were being made. He also urged the striking workers to reconsider their decision and return to work, emphasizing that the MC is open to engaging in dialogue to address their concerns once the strike is called off.
The strike has caused significant disruption, particularly with Sunday already being a non-working day for collectors, and the situation continues to affect residents’ daily lives.
