Haryana, December 10:
BJP candidate Rekha Sharma filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-election on Tuesday. Chief Minister Nayab Saini was also present with her. Rekha Sharma’s victory is almost certain, as the BJP has enough numbers to secure a win.
The announcement of Rekha Sharma’s name by the BJP came as a surprise, as her name was not in the list of potential Rajya Sabha candidates. She has previously served as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women and has been associated with the BJP for several decades.
Her election to the Rajya Sabha is expected to be unopposed. In the 90-member Haryana Legislative Assembly, the BJP holds 48 seats and has the support of three independent legislators. On the other hand, the Congress has decided not to field a candidate as it only has 37 seats. Two days ago, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had said that if there were two seats for the Rajya Sabha, he would have definitely fielded a candidate. This is the second time that the Congress has refrained from contesting the election. Earlier, when Kiran Choudhary was elected to the Rajya Sabha, Congress did not field a candidate either.
