Assam, January 8: The body of one of the nine workers trapped in a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was recovered by Army divers on Wednesday, officials confirmed. This marked the third day of rescue operations.
Rescuers, including teams from the Army, Navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are working tirelessly to locate the remaining eight miners. However, officials fear their chances of survival are slim.
The miners became trapped on Monday when a sudden inflow of water flooded the coal mine in the 3 Kilo area near Umrangso. Divers located a body early Wednesday morning, but its identity has not yet been confirmed.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences on social media platform X, stating, “21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family.”
Sarma assured the public that rescue efforts are continuing with full force, with divers from the Army and NDRF already inside the mine. Navy personnel are on-site and preparing to join the operation.
On Tuesday, Sarma revealed that the mine appeared to be operating illegally. Police have since arrested one person in connection with the incident.
