Manchester (England), January 15:
Achamma Cherian, a 57-year-old nurse of Indian origin, suffered a critical injury after being attacked with scissors by a patient at the acute medical unit of Oldham Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester.
The patient, a man in his 30s, has been arrested. Cherian, who has worked at Oldham Royal for over a decade, is currently in critical condition.
According to reports, the attacker, identified as Mohammed Roman Haque, allegedly assaulted Cherian after becoming upset about being asked to wait for a medical assessment. Haque has since appeared at the Manchester Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
Cherian’s neighbors shared that she lived near the hospital and often worked night shifts.
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the incident on social media, emphasizing that “nurses are the backbone of the NHS and must be able to work without fear of violence.” Oldham West MP Jim McMahon also expressed outrage, describing the attack as “senseless.”
The incident has sparked discussions about the need to enhance safety measures for healthcare workers across the country.
